Painting Pratice

Berlin-based painter Marylou Guerra recalibrates art historical approaches to portraiture and still life, casting these enduring genres in a fresh political and contemporary light, while keeping them rooted in a deeply personal context.

She has been creating art since age 4, taught by a local oil master from Bordeaux, JM Charpentier. She then studied applied Arts and Traditional techniques of Animated Cinema at Esaat Roubaix.

Marylou Guerra works with watercolours, chalks, inks and oils with an focus on gestures and dance, and music.

She works in a variety of media, experimenting with formats in painting, etching, short films and Djing. She is a followed radio host dedicated to experimental and club music.

Her principal focus remains her distinctive drawings and portraits, often details from press photography, or odes to traditional societies, always with a strong political view.

Her works are characterised by bold and vibrant colours, brutal but graceful gestures, ethnographic elements and interesting representations of the human form.

Music

Pleasure and repetition, declension of the word percussion, Marylou carves raw oneirism.
Raised between forests and ocean in the south west coast of France, her first language is painting and cinema, both soaked in her deep passion for ethnology and traditional societies.

It’s under her name that she opens the nets of her vast collection of records and sound crops, weaving her delicate mesh in between traditional music, bass ,noise detonations, cloudy waters of psychedelic dubs or sinuous paths of improvised music and electronic avant-garde.

After teens years spent in the soundsystem and club culture in Bordeaux, later evolving in the classic jazz and club scene of paris, as a writer and promoter. She started sharing tunes as a Rinse France resident, inviting guests as Steve O Malley, Mike Cooper, or Dj Pete, Waqwaq kingdom, Kassem Mosse, together with delivering Artworks for labels such as Mathematics, or Lavibe. She now also operate at cashmere radio in berlin, and appear on NTS, or Boxout India. Her creative and daring sense of selecting and djing is one of a kind.
She’s recently played the Morphine night in Berghain where she layered all sorts of unconventional and uncompromising beats in the most elegant way, but also in the rest of the world in Japan (Forest Limits, Soto..) ,Freerotation in Wales, Taiwan’s Organik Festival, Intonal in Sweden, London’s Cafe OTO or the great Terraforma, after been regular at former parisian Concrete or La Station in Paris. Now based in Berlin, she performed at the bests OHM, Arkaoda, Grieshmuehle, CTM festival, Sameheads, legendary Room for Resistance or Wax Treatment party.
